Hip-hop is synonymous with men wearing baggy jeans, clean sneakers, and the fitted hat worn to the side. The hoodie trend has recently escalated in popularity due to its new unconventional look. Hip-hop heavyweights such as Lil’ Wayne and Jay-Z have been seen wearing colorful hoodies with outlandish patterns plastered on every inch of its fabric, inside and out. The colors range from the basic black to lime green and hot pink. The patterns on these hoodies are what make them unique from what people have seen in the past. The patterned hoodies began in Japan by a man named Nigo who created an urban clothing and shoe line called A Bathing Ape. Nigo’s one-of-a-kind hoodies are his most popular clothing apparel. His hoodies have the camouflage pattern with the image of the Bathing Ape meshed in the camouflage design. BAPE caught the eye of Pharrell Williams who was also working on his own line of clothing and shoes. Nigo and Pharrell collaborated on their hoodie designs and this began the hoodie trend. They covered hoodies with images of assorted color diamonds, money rolls, and beepers. As with any other trend, designers saw the success of this unique fashion trend and began putting their own spin to the hoodies. You may now see reversible hoodies with bold patterns on the inside and bland patterns on the outside. Hoodies are now covered in colorful flowers, skulls, stars, and even cupcakes. Hip-hop has many trends that come and go, only time can tell if the hoodie has staying power.
